See the difference with 'Brain & Vision'
by Bryan Schubert
We all dread the idea of aging, and whilst some causes of aging are lifestyle, others are genetic traits. Vision is one of those, but also one of those traits which we can take preventative measures against. Clinically studied measures include adapting lifestyle, eating nutrient rich foods and supplements rich in specialized eye nutrients.
Filter Your View
It is well known that UV light from the sun’s rays causes damage to your eyes, however it is less commonly known that HEV (blue) light, also has health professionals concerned about its effects on the human eye. Whilst the amount of blue light that reaches the human eye is much less than that from the sun, in today’s digital world, the frequency of which we use devices which emit blue light, is causing eye strain and in some cases macular degeneration.
A few ways to combat exposure to blue light on your devices includes using filters specifically designed to significantly reduce the light emitted, use of special-purpose glasses and various settings on devices now have the option to switch to “Blue light mode”.
One option is to eat an abundance of green leafy plants and colorful fruits and vegetables, rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids which have been shown through structural and clinical studies to be concentrated in the macular segment of the retina. Diets rich in these two nutrients may help reduce the effects of age-related eye diseases, for example, one study found that people who ate foods rich in zeaxanthin may be half as likely to get cataracts. These particular antioxidants, are unique in that they protect your eyesfrom harmful high-energy light waves like ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Studies suggest that a high level of both these carotenoids in eye tissue is linked with better vision, especially in dim light or where glare is a problem.
